James "Jimmy" Oscar Mizell, Jr of Beech Bluff, TN is in the care of Medina Funeral Home. The family will hold a memorial service at East Trinity United Methodist Church, Jackson, on Thursday, August 11th at 1pm.  A short graveside service will follow at Ridgecrest Cemetery, Jackson.  Due to extenuating circumstances, the family requests any food and flowers be sent directly to the church.

Jimmy was born April 14, 1929 in Savannah, GA and departed this life August 3, 2016 at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital. He was preceded in death by his parents; James Oscar Mizell, Sr and Emma Irene Hardy Mizell, first wife; Margaret Underwood Mizell, and 4 half-brothers.

Jimmy was a lifelong Methodist and a member of East Trinity Methodist Church, Jackson.  At 16, he started his journalism career as a copy boy for Savannah Morning News, working up to reporter. After serving his country and the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict, Jimmy returned back to Savannah and the Morning News. He then reported for the Tuscaloosa News, Tuscaloosa, AL; returned back to Savannah for a short while; moved on to Cleveland (TN) Daily Banner, Dothan (AL) News; and finally stopped at the Jackson Sun.  Jimmy worked at the Jackson Sun for 20 yrs before retiring in 1992.  While in Jackson, Jimmy was instrumental in setting up the Madison County Ambulance Service and served as a reserve Madison County Deputy Sheriff. He enjoyed woodworking and passed his passion to his grandchildren.  He was a doting grandfather - taking the grandchildren to school and numerous sporting events.

Jimmy is survived by his wife; Roberta Powell Loyd Mizell, Beech Bluff, TN, children; Denise (Neal) Crews, Earl (Rene) Mizell, all of Jackson, TN, sister; Caroline Mizell Smithy, Frost, TX, stepdaughters; Iris (Allen) Cooper, Henderson, TN, April (Floyd) Jones, Marie (Randy) Durham, all of Jackson, TN, stepsons; Tommy (Patricia) Loyd, Jimmy (Catherine) Loyd, all of Beech Bluff, TN,  15 grandchildren; and 17 great grandchildren.
