Funeral services for Mr. Jerry Wayne Rodgers, age 74, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, November 16, 2014 in the chapel of Medina Funeral Home with Bro. Steve Osborne officiating. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Hopewell Cemetery near Medina.
Mr. Rodgers died Thursday, November 13, 2014 at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital after a 4 year long battle with a rare disease called Progressive Supranuclear Palsy.
Mr. Rodgers was born December 26, 1939 to the late William Odell and Clatie Pauline Brasfield Rodgers and attended Pope Elementary and Northside High Schools. He attained his GED after leaving his graduating class of 1958 and joining the Navy. Jerry was an Air Traffic Controller in the US Navy and retired after 20 years of service as a Chief Petty Officer. Mr. Rodgers was a long time member of Bethel Baptist Church. Jerry liked sports and was an avid NASCAR fan; he also had a very special love for music.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one infant daughter, Teresa; two brothers, James and Robert Rodgers; sister, Martha Vinson.
He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Patsy Rodgers of Medina; three children by a previous marriage, Captain Jon Rodgers and wife Sherry of San Diego, CA, Jimmy Rodgers and wife Caroline of Humboldt, Jackie Holland and husband Mark of Camden; grandchildren, Zack Henley, Brandy Holland, and Alex Rodgers; sisters, Shirley Jordan of Milan, Judy Battaglia of Gibson; step-mother, Mildred Rodgers; several nieces and nephews.
Visitation with the Rodgers family will be held Saturday, November 15, 2014 from 4 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
The family whishes to extend a very special thanks to a dear friend and caregiver, Melva Mitchell.
