MARY ATKINS
Mary Ruth Howell Atkins passed away peacefully June 14, 2014 at the age of 100. The youngest of three children, Mary Ruth was born November 9, 1913 and lived her entire life in the Double Springs/Gibson, TN community.
Mary Ruth lived a full and active life with loyal involvement in many organizations. She was a charter member of the Jackson Circle, organized in 1933; a member of Gibson Methodist Church for over 80 years; a fierce competitor within the Jackson Duplicate Bridge Club until her mid 90’s, where she always played to win, a member of the Gibson Book Club and always enjoyed lunching with the Fabulous Females. An avid gardener, she was also a member of the Gibson Garden Club for over 66 years where she won numerous awards for her flowers and plants. The local communities will miss her humor and insight through the weekly Gibson News Article she wrote for over 25 years. She was well known to all for her beautiful quilts, custom sewing, and delicious canning and preserves. Her community, her neighbors and all her many friends will deeply miss her, but celebrate her wonderful life.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, James; her son Robert Dale (Jane) and her grandson Robert Hudson (Jane). She is survived by her two granddaughters, Anne Short(Doug) and Mary McCarroll (Mac) and 7 great grandchildren.
Graveside services will be 11 am Monday June 16, at White Rose Cemetery, with Bro. Darrell Ridgley officiating. Visitation will be 9-11 am Monday prior to services at Gibson Funeral Home.
The family requests that memorials be sent to Lakeshore United Methodist Assembly or White Rose Cemetery Fund in Gibson, TN.
