Mary Estelle Culp Barker
Mary Estelle Culp Barker passed away March 29, 2014, after a long illness, at her home in the Edison community of Gibson County, TN. Estelle, 101 years old was born October 28, 1912 in Little Beach Creek, Wayne County, TN. The daughter of the late Fred and Carrie Childress Culp. At the age of six, the family moved to Gibson County, and resided on a farm in the Frog Jump community. Late 1920 the family moved a few miles to the Edison community to operate a General Merchandise Store.

Estelle Graduated from Peabody High School in 1931, where she excelled as a basketball player. She attended Union University in Jackson and University of Tennessee Junior College in Martin, TN. She taught for a number of years at Eaton Center and Edison, in the Gibson County School System.

Before the advancement of age, Estelle was active in the Oak Grove United Methodist Church where she was the oldest member. She was also involved in the Home Demonstration Club, which named her Woman of the Year, the Trenton Garden Club, and other community activities. Estelle is also preceded in death by her husband of nearly 65 years, Joe W. Barker and a sister; Aileen (Shorty) King.

She is survived by two sons; Alfred M. Barker and Joe M. Barker  both of Trenton (Edison), brother; Frederick M. Culp of Trenton, four grandchildren, five great grandchildren, one great great grandchild, and Louise Faulkner, A faithful care giver.


Funeral services are 11 am Monday March 31, 2014 from the Oak Grove United Methodist Church with an hour of visitation prior. Burial will follow in the Oak Grove United Methodist Cemetery.
