Norma Sue Greer, formally from Union City, departed this life on Wednesday, April 17, 2019 at the age of 77 in Jackson, Tennessee. A HOMECOMING Celebration Service to honor the life of Mrs. Sue Greer of Union City, Tenessee will be held on Sunday May 5, 2:30 PM at The First Baptist Church of Union City. Friends and family are welcome to attend, and a reception will follow at the Family Life Center.

Sue Greer was a class act who loved her family and friends and lived a life serving others. She believed in the simplicity of grace offered by her Savior, Jesus Christ. She is with him now and working on decorating heaven for the rest of us.

Born the 7th child of 15 children, February 8, 1942 in Cash, Arkansas, she was the daughter of Ruby Estell and Central Earl Overfield. She is preceded in death by her parents, one older brother, Bob Overfield and her in-laws, J D and Erna Greer.

She is survived by a collage of family: her loving husband, of 58 years, Jimmy Dean Greer; two sons, Brad Greer (Jennifer) and Dean Greer (Lori); seven grandchildren, Jonathan, Emily Anne, Cameron, Abby, Claudia, Ginny, and Julia; one great-grandchild, Sera; thirteen siblings, Gracie Lee Brown, Bo Overfield, Joann Priest, Patsy Morgan, Jane Higgs, Don Overfield, Butch Overfield, Glenda Browder, Donna London, June Lloyd, Roger Overfield, Ricky Overfield, and Sherry Trotter; and a plethora of wonderful bother and sister in laws, neices, nephews, and cousins, who deserve to be named here, but there are simply not enough pages in the paper to list!

Sue grew up in Grubbs, Arkansas in a financially poor, but lovingly rich home with sisters and brothers who were close then and remain close throughout life.

Sue attended and graduated from Arkansas State University, where she met Jim of Searcy, Arkansas. They were married on August 21,1960. They briefly lived in Kosciusko, Mississippi before moving to Blytheville, Arkansas. Dean was born in December of 1964, and Bradley in September of 1968. During the years in Blytheville, Sue was a homemaker and part-time secretary of Presbyterian Christian Academy. (PCA)

In 1980, the family moved to Jonesboro; and then in 1983, they settled into their beloved Union City. Dean returned to Arkansas to begin college, and Sue, Jim, and Brad became very involved in Union City life.

Sue was an accomplished woman who had a God-given desire to share her talents with others and mentor those who desired to better themselves and the world around them. She was a no-nonsense woman who knew what she wanted, went after and achieved it with ease, discipline, and a moral compas that guided her journey. Her accomplishments were accompanied with humor and fun for those around her.

Sue was an active member of Review Club and the ladies bridge club. Sue was the “go-to” choice for throwing teas and parties for brides and mom’s to-be. Her parties were filled with southern charm and grace, flower arrangements from her garden, and great food from her capable hands. Her abilities with decorating were exemplary, and her desire to share with others made for great events that enriched the lives of those around her. She longed for young women to have a service organization and was instrumental in starting the Junior Auxillary of Union City.

First Baptist Church, Union City was and will always be the church of Sue and Jim’s calling, to grow and serve in God’s love. Over 36 years Sue served in many ways; choir member, Sunday School teacher, committee leader who designed the remaking of the sanctuary, and volunteer for numerous other committees and events.

In 1988, after Brad began college at Union University, Sue moved quickly from empty nester to career woman and began a 25 year run at her State Farm Insurance agency. Applying her business education and people skills, she grew an outstanding agency serving the people of Obion and surrounding counties.

In 2013 Sue retired and returned to being a homemaker. She was able to enjoy a few years with Jim before the affects of dementia/Alzheimer’s became severe enough that Jim decided to move to Jackson to live with Bradley for  help with Sue’s care. On April 17, 2019 at the age of 77, Sue’s battle with the disease ended, and she went home to be with her Savior and Creator.
