Walt Mestan

July 21, 1930 — September 15, 2022

Jackson

Walter Charles Mestan passed away on Thursday, September 15, 2022, in Jackson, Tennessee. Walt was born in Lincolnville, Kansas, on July 21, 1903. His parents were Stephen Gustav Mestan and Anna Slavik Mestan. The family eventually moved to Chicago, Illinois, where he grew up.

Walt came to Jackson in 1949 as a pitcher for the original Jackson Generals baseball team, playing in the 1950 and 1951 seasons. During his tenure with the team, Walt started a plastering business under the name Walt Mestan Co. He declined the opportunity to move up in minor league baseball to focus on his business opportunities here in Jackson. The decision proved correct. One of his first advertisements read: “If you want it done fasterer, call Walt the plasterer.” His business took off, and he gradually became a well-known businessman inJackson. In 1952, he married Rosemary Ford. She led him to obey the gospel of Jesus Christ and was a cherished and patient wife to Walt for 64 years, as well as a loving mother to their children. Walt’s company continued to thrive throughout his years in Jackson as he added The Fireplace Center and a scaffolding rental business to his company portfolio.Walt also proudly served in the United States Army National Guard.

Walt is survived by two brothers: Victor Mestan of Arlington, Texas, and Dr. Ronald Mestan of Lebanon, Missouri. Walt was also survived by two children, Marilyn Killian (David) of Soddy Daisy and Wally Mestan of Jackson. After Walt’s passing, his son, Wally, also passed away on September 23, 2022. Walt is also survived by four grandchildren: Eric DeTorres (39), Dustin DeTorres (34), Gene Mestan (41), and Jake Mestan (34).

Walt’s church family remembers him as an active and faithful member of the North Jackson church of Christ in Jackson, Tennessee. His love for Bible study and worshiping God was evident in his regular attendance and participation at every opportunity. Walt was especially concerned about sharing the gospel of Christ with his friends, family, and anyonehe met.
